Melton Hockey Club was formed in 1952, recently passing it's 50th anniversary. Up until 1962, the club was know as 'Melton Old Grammarians', consisting of just one team playing friendly matches. The club then moved on to league hockey for 10 years till 1972, whilst playing at Egerton Park.
A slow period of expansion occurred with another 2 teams being added, taking the total to 3 by 1982, and then 4 until 1992, moving to the new Astroturf at KE VII Upper School.
Currently we have five mens teams all playing BodyKraft Midlands league hockey. The club is still based at King Edwards Upper School, where it shares facilities with the local community and Melton Rugby Club. The club has over 70 active members, ages ranging from 14 to 60, playing from September to April throughout the Midlands. The club also have two women's teams both playing in the Leicestershire leagues and junior and youth teams.
Season 2002-2003 saw both 1st XI and 2nd XI being promoted. The 1st XI finished second in Midlands 2, scoring 96 goals in the process of going into Division 1. The 2nd XI were outright champions of East Midlands 1, being promoted to East Midlands Premier for the first time. The club also won the Leicestershire County Championship in 2003.
Season 2003-2004 once again saw two teams being promoted, the 3rd and 4th XI. Melton Hockey Club also amalgamated with Melton Ladies Hockey Club forming a new Melton Hockey Club. In 2004-2005 the ladies formed a new 2nd XI, having two teams playing league hockey.
Season 2006-2007 saw Melton were once again County champions. The 1st XI reached the semi finals of the Harrods UK Trophy. The winning run saw Melton beat Coalville, Newent, Leicester Thursday and Gore Court. Banbury from the South League proved too strong in the semi final and were the eventual winners.
The club can regularly be found touring under the disguise of 'Grapetonkers'. |
